ADRIAN, Mich. - After a months-worth of non-conference action, the Adrian women's soccer team will open play in the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) this week with two in-league matches.
The Bulldogs, who closed their out-of-conference schedule on Saturday afternoon with an overtime loss at Wooster, enter the week with an even 5-5 record, including three wins at Docking Stadium.
Adrian will look to keep its good fortune at home rolling when it hosts Alma on Tuesday evening.
The Scots (2-5) had lost back-to-back matches before defeating Manchester 3-0 this past Saturday.
Three different scorers have contributed multiple goals for Alma so far this season, including Meghan Pfile, Lily Stephan and Paige Stephens, who have recorded two goals each. Stephan, a junior midfielder, has also chipped in an additional two assists to lead the Scots in total points with six.
The black and gold have won six consecutive matchups against the Scots, outscoring them 15-3 during that stretch which dates back to 2017.
Then, on Saturday, the locals retake the road to challenge Kalamazoo (6-1).
The Hornets were projected the finish second in the MIAA's Preseason Coaches' Poll back in August, only two spots ahead of Adrian.
Sophomore defender Erin Somsel was recently tabbed with the conference's women's soccer defensive athlete of the week honors for her efforts between September 13-19.
Somsel has started in the last two matches for Kalamazoo, and while she has not produced anything offensively, her contributions on the defensive side of the ball were key as the Hornets posted their fourth shutout victory of the season on the 19th at Illinois Tech.
Offensively, Destiny Garcia and Kai Ketola have each scored four goals for the Hornets, combining for 23 total shots on goal.
The 'Dogs had been riding a four-game win-streak against Kalamazoo before the Hornets claimed a 2-0 decision back in March of this year.
Adrian saw a couple of pieces return to the line-up this past week, including
Makenna Mascaro, who had not played for the team since September 5, but contributed 61 minutes off the bench on Saturday at Wooster.
Over last week's trio of games, the Bulldog offense tallied eight goals and seven assists.
McKenna Mahoney and
Morgan Wands were responsible for seven of those goals, scoring four and three, respectively. Junior,
Eve Davis dished out five assists, the second-highest overall total in the MIAA.
Between the posts,
Taylor Fischer capped off a good week with 16 total saves en route to a 0.842 save-percentage. In 10 matches covered this season, Fischer is allowing 1.28 goals per game behind 54 saves.
Live stats and video will be available for both matches.
