Baseball Looks to Snag No. 2 Seed for MIAA Tournament with Regular Season Ending this Weekend

ADRIAN, Mich. – The Adrian College baseball team wraps up the regular season this week with five games on the schedule. The Bulldogs added a pair of 7-inning nonconference matchups against Otterbein University before taking on Kalamazoo College in the final MIAA series of the regular season.

The Bulldogs are looking to sneak into the No. 2 spot in the MIAA standings with a sweep over Kalamazoo College. The Bulldogs will look for help from Alma College as they play Kalamazoo in a doubleheader on Wednesday. With a help from Alma, things are made a lot easier for the Bulldogs to grab the second seed.

The Bulldogs have been playing well as of late winning six out of the last seven games. Adrian is coming off a sweep over Olivet and a series win over Alma where they won the final two games 7-5 and 8-6. The Bulldogs are supporting a 19-15 record on the year and are 11-7 in MIAA conference play. Otterbein comes in with a 24-10 record on the year and have already defeated Adrian earlier in the season in a 10-5 game. Kalamazoo comes in with a 19-10 record and sit 11-5 in the MIAA standings while also holding a six-game winning streak as of Tuesday.

Don Goodes has been a big part to the offense this season leading the team with a batting average of .382. He also leads the team in hits, runs scored, doubles, total bases, walks, and stolen bases. Dylan Johnson has also contributed heavily at the plate supporting a .356 average with seven doubles, four triples, a homer and 17 RBIs. The power of the lineup has come from the bat of AJ Miranda who leads the team in slugging percentage of .667, home runs with seven, and RBIs with 38.

The pitching staff has been solid as of late as well allowing eight or less runs in its last nine outings. Michael Swanson has sat as the top starter for the Bulldogs with a 3-2 record on the year in five starts with a pair of complete games in 34 innings pitched. He holds an ERA of 3.44 with 32 strikeouts and an opponent batting average of .183. Joe Toth has made a few of solid starts recently with all three starts on the season lasting at lead five innings. He holds a 3.21 ERA on the year in 28 innings with an opponent batting average of .210.

Out of the bullpen, the Bulldogs see Griffin Firestine and Jacob Hanoian. Firestine has thrown just over ten innings this spring and has recorded an ERA of 2.53 in three appearances. Hanoian sits at the back end of the bullpen sitting with six saves on the season and one away from tying the career saves record at Adrian College with 13 after racking up six last season.

The Bulldogs have a busy week ahead with the doubleheader against Otterbein beginning Wednesday at 2:00 PM followed by the doubleheader against Kalamazoo on Saturday before the regular season finale on the road at Kalamazoo on Sunday. In between games on Saturday, the Bulldogs will host its senior day ceremony.
