ADRIAN, Mich. -- The Adrian College Women's ACHA Division 2 hockey team split with Michigan State University in their final regular season series of the year. The Bulldogs earned a 3-2 shootout victory on Saturday at home, before dropping the second game, 2-1, on the road on Sunday.
Before puck drop at the Arrington Ice Arena, the Bulldogs and Spartans came together at center ice on Saturday to join arms in a moment of silence and honor the MSU community after the horrible and fatal shooting that took place on MSU's campus last week. All fans in attendance were encouraged to wear Green in support of the Spartans.
In what was an exciting back and forth game in front of a heavy crowd, the Bulldogs, who were down 2-1 with just minutes remaining, were able to tie the game on a goal by defenseman,
Madison Grimm, with 50 seconds left to force extra time.
Kathleen Droba had the other lone goal for the Bulldogs. A scoreless overtime led to Adrian securing the win in a shootout on a deciding goal by forward,
Jordin Giove. Goaltender,
Hannah Taylor, was stellar in goal, stopping 28 of 30 shots in the victory.
The two teams would battle again on Sunday to close out the regular season, but it was MSU who pulled out on top. Adrian goal was scored by forward, Jasmine Reibel, her ninth of the campaign assisted by Giove. Taylor was strong in goal once again, this time stopping 40 of 42 shots.
The WD2 Bulldogs, who wrap up regular season play with a 14-8-0 record (11-4-1 Conference record), head into the CCWHA Division 2 Conference Playoffs as the No. 4 seed this coming weekend. The tournament, which operates under a Round Robin Pool Play format, will feature the Bulldogs facing off against No. 1 Sault College in game one on Friday at 4:45 PM, and then No. 2 Michigan State University and No. 3 Central Michigan University in a two-game slate on Saturday at 10:00 AM and 7:30 PM. The two teams with the most points after Friday and Saturday advance to the Championship game on Sunday afternoon. All games will be played at the Crystal Field House in Flint, Michigan.
