Bloomington, Ill. -- The Adrian College Men's ACHA Division 2 hockey team traveled to Illinois this past weekend to take on Illinois State in a two-game series, taking down the Red Birds 7-3 in both games.
Adrian's high powered offense was no match for ISU this weekend as the Bulldogs tallied fourteen times on 92 shots over the two-game set. On Friday night, after starting the game down by two, the Bulldogs fired back on goals from
Cole Weber,
Willie McGuire, and
Marcus Mack to close the first frame up 3-2. Second period action saw the Bulldogs tack on three more, this time from
Dominic Melone,
Ryan Hutcheson, and one more from McGuire. Illinois State opened the third with a tally of their own before
Steven Cope found the back of the net in the dying seconds to secure the 7-3 victory. Goaltenders
Alexander Herman and
Petr Sup both saw action in the win.
The two teams would meet again on Saturday afternoon to close out the series, but it was Adrian's stellar offense that prevailed again. Melone,
Brady DesMadryl, and
Joey Finfer opened the scoring in period one, while
Matthew Krueger and Melone tallied in period two bringing the score to 5-3 heading into the final frame. Cope and
Sam Carper would eventually rip twine in the third period to put the Bulldogs back up by four, ending in another 7-3 victory and series sweep. Freshman forward
Max Cohen delivered four assists in the sweep and Sup earned his sixth and seventh wins of the season in goal.
The MD2 Bulldogs improve to 21-1 on the season and will have a week break before they return to action in early February when they take on Michigan State and Trine University in a three game weekend. The Bulldogs will be at home against Michigan State on February 1, then battle with Trine in a home and home on February 2-3. The team will honor their Senior Class of 2024 before the game on February 3 at 7:00 PM at the Arrington Ice Arena.
