GLEN ALLEN, Va. – The Adrian College women's golf team competed in a two-day tournament in Virginia hosted by Randolph-Macon College. The Max/Susan Stith Invitational serves as one of the most competitive tournaments in the country for NCAA Division III women's golf. The Bulldogs entered the tournament ranked 44
th in the country and finished fifth in the 15-team tournament.
The Bulldogs totaled a two-round score of 627 after shooting 316 on Monday followed by a 311 on Tuesday. Adrian went on to defeat eight teams ranked higher than them in the national rankings after entering the tournament as the third lowest ranked team. The only teams to shoot better than the Bulldogs was No. 1 Carnegie Mellon, No. 3 Emory University, No. 8 Washington and Lee, and No. 24 Methodist University.
The eight higher ranked teams that the Bulldogs defeated were No. 21 Rhodes College, No. 17 Centre College, No. 30 University of Lynchburg, No. 28 Huntingdon College, No. 42 Randolph-Macon College, No. 27 Denison University, No. 43 York College, and No. 32 Christopher Newport.
Riley Kleck and
Lauren Reed led the way for the Bulldogs as they tied for tenth in the field. Kleck shot a 78 in the opening round followed by a 74 on Tuesday to total a 152. Reed also shot 152 after totaling a 75 on Monday and a 77 on Tuesday.
Olivia Ohmer placed 19
th individually where she finished with a 79 and a 76 to total 155.
Sara Bevington rounded out the team scoring for the Bulldogs where she shot 168 with back-to-back rounds of 84.
Ainslee Hewitt struggled on day one of the tournament finishing with a 105, but bounced back to make significate improvement and shoot 84 on day two.
Adrian will take their momentum into the final MIAA Jamboree at Trine University on Thursday, April 11. This Jamboree started in the fall, but was postponed to the spring due to poor weather conditions. It will serve as the last conference round before the MIAA Spring Final on April 22-23. The Bulldogs sit in second place in the MIAA Standings behind Saint Mary's College by one stroke. The Jamboree will tee off at Zolner Golf Course in Angola, Indiana at 1:00 PM.
