ADRIAN, Mich. -- The Adrian College Men's ACHA D3 hockey team opened up a dominate weekend against Cental Michigan University, with a 7-2 victory on the road Saturday evening and a 9-5 victory at Arrington Ice Arena Sunday afternoon.
Saturday evening, Adrian opened the scoring six minutes into the first period when Anthony Alfonsi buried his eighth of the season off a setup from Walker Claiborne and Luke Miller. From there, the Bulldogs steadily tightened their grip on the game. Just 20 seconds into the second period, Maximilian Schadel extended the lead with his tenth of the year, and Henry Darnell followed with a strike of his own less than three minutes later. Gavin Scally made it 4–0 shortly after, capitalizing on another Adrian surge. Central Michigan finally responded at 17:08 with a goal, but Adrian still carried full control into the final frame. In the third, Schadel struck again at 7:20, his second of the night and eleventh of the season, before Nicholas Therrien added another to push the lead to 6–2. Nolan Doersch capped the scoring with a shorthanded tally in the final minute, putting an exclamation mark on a dominant effort. Peyton Lenger was exceptional between the pipes, stopping 49 of 51 shots.
Central Michigan opened the scoring at 5:17 of the first period, however Adrian responded quickly, with Ty Rollenhagen scoring less than a minute later. Scally then gave the Bulldogs their first lead at 8:00. The Chippewas closed the period strong, tying the game on a power-play goal at 16:16 to make it 2–2 heading into the first intermission. Adrian took control of the game in the second period, outscoring Central Michigan 5–1. Claiborne gave the Bulldogs the lead early at 3:44 before Central Michigan briefly pulled even on a man-advantage goal. From there, Adrian seized momentum with a series of rapid strikes. Alfonsi scored back-to-back goals at 8:30 and 8:45, followed by JT Schmidt at 10:01. Schadel capped the run with a goal at 14:07, sending Adrian into the third period with a commanding 7–3 lead. Central Michigan attempted to rally in the final frame, scoring at 5:14. However, Adrian continued to manage the pace and sealed the game late when Maxim Sorel scored a short-handed empty-net goal at 17:52. The Chippewas added one final goal, but the Bulldogs advantage held firm. In net, Adrian goaltender Peyton Lenger stopped 32 of 37 shots to earn the win.
The MD3 Bulldogs will be back in action Saturday and Sunday for a home-and-home series against Lawrence Tech. The Bulldogs will hit the road Saturday for a 5:00 PM puck drop and back at home Sunday for a 4:00 PM puck drop. Sunday will also be Military Appreciation Night.
