Key Second Half Run Leads to 61-54 Win over Calvin

ADRIAN, Mich. - It has been a long time coming so victory was very sweet on Saturday afternoon as the Adrian College women's basketball team defeated Calvin College, 61-54, snapping a 10-game losing streak to the Knights which dating back to 2003. It appeared that Calvin would get their 11th straight over the Bulldogs leading 41-30 with 11:55 left in the game but Adrian closed out the contest on a 31-13 run moving to 5-8 overall and 3-2 in the MIAA.

For the second straight game, Jennifer Perrin led Adrian in scoring with 14 points going 5-of-8 from the field and 3-of-3 at the line. Perrin also had 10 second-half points while recording four rebounds and three steals. The Adrian bench outscored Calvin, 29-12, as Liz Hafeli scored 11 points and JaLisha Belle scored a season-high 10 points. Hafeli was 4-of-6 overall and also tallied two steals in 21 minutes. Belle went a perfect 5-of-5 overall and grabbed two rebounds in 11 minutes. Belle entered the contest averaging 3.5 points this season.

Adrian trailed 28-24 at halftime but closed out the half on a 10-3 run to cut an 11-point lead down to four. In the second half, Calvin had their last double digit lead at 45-35 with 10:04 remaining on a pair of free throws from Marcia Harris, who finished with a double-double of 18 points and 10 rebounds. Kim Olech hit a driving lay-in to cut the lead to 46-40 at the 7:04 mark. The Bulldogs took the lead for good on a three-pointer by Perrin with 4:07 left making it 50-48.

Calvin shot just 21.4 percent in the second half and 30.8 percent for the game. The Knights committed 21 turnovers and were just 2-of-12 from behind the arc. Adrian shot 48.1 percent in the last stanza and finished going 23-of-53 (.434) and 13-of-20 at the free throw line. The Bulldogs outrebounded Calvin, 41-32, including 14 offensive caroms.
