The women's basketball team faced an uphill battle at Alma College on Saturday for most of the game and nearly picked up a conference road win against the Scots before falling 69-67. Adrian is now 3-2 overall and the loss evened their MIAA record at 1-1.
Alma grabbed the early lead and held onto it for most of the first half. The Bulldogs got their first tie of the game at 22-22 at the 4:15 mark of the opening half as Elysia Norris' layup knotted things up. Adrian took the lead on their next possession after a Jenn Headley jumper at the 3:55 mark. Rachael Walker followed with a pair of free throws at 3:21 and then Adrian took their largest lead of the game at 2:44 as Anita Stamps hit a jumper to give the Bulldogs a 28-22 lead. The black and gold took a 32-29 lead into intermission.
The Scots came out of the locker room and put together a quick run to tie the score at 36-36 at the 16:39 mark. The teams battled for the next several minutes as Alma lead twice by four points heading into the final 10 minutes. The Scots pushed their lead to 59-52 at the 7:20 mark and looked to be in charge. The Bulldogs had other plans and would not go away. Adrian cut the lead to 61-58 at the 4:31 mark on a Stamps basket.
Alma did not make a field goal in the last 7:20 of the contest and relied upon their free throw shooting to hold off the Bulldogs. Adrian got the game within one possession twice in the final three minutes but Alma made enough freebies down the stretch. Adrian made it 67-65 with 16 seconds to go after a three-point play by Jennifer Perrin. Katie Ross fouled Danielle Hicks with 12 ticks left and she made both shots at the line to put Alma ahead 69-65. Kayla Galecka made a jumper with one second left but Adrian could not get a steal or foul to stop the clock.
Stamps led Adrian with 14 points on 5-of-12 shooting from the field. She also had seven rebounds, two assists and two steals in 30 minutes. Ashley McClarren finished with 12 points and six rebounds. Perrin added 11 points and eight rebounds in 34 minutes. Adrian shot 41.1 percent for the game and were 17-of-22 at the foul line.
