Men's Lacrosse Opens Up with 14-11 Win at Birmingham Southern

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The men's lacrosse team began their season with a 14-11 win at Birmingham Southern.

The Bulldogs had a balanced scoring game as 12 different players etched their name into the scoresheet. Ryan Knautz and Jeff Ivey each had two goals to lead the team against the first-year program of Birmingham Southern.

Adrian had a very strong first half and led 11-4 at the break. The Bulldogs trailed 1-0 early but scored the next five goals to take a 5-1 lead with 5:58 left in the first quarter. Tony Schrank, Knautz, Tyler Tanguay, Nate Holmes and Trevor Synek all scored for Adrian.

The Bulldogs took an 8-2 lead at the 11:19 mark of the second quarter. Ivey, Sam Alden and Knautz put Adrian in the driver's seat but they did not cruise to the win. Adrian led 12-4 in the third after a Josh Maluta goal at 8:37 but Birmingham Southern scored five straight goals to cut the lead to 12-9 with 9:50 left in the game.

Brad Higgins ended the run at 8:16 unassisted and after Jacob McPherson's back-to-back goals it was George Riegel who scored at 1:05 to put the final nail in the coffin. David Monroe led Adrian with three assists and also led the team with seven shots. Eric Lindstrom got the start in goal and made 14 saves in the contest. Adrian was outshot, 40-36, but won 17-of-28 faceoffs.
