Box Score ADRIAN, Mich. – It was a tough loss to swallow on Saturday as the Adrian College women's basketball team fell to Kalamazoo College 58-54 during the 2nd Annual PinkZone game. The loss drops the Bulldogs to 7-13 on the season and 4-9 in the MIAA.
The first half saw five lead changes and four ties as both teams battle back and forth the entire half. Kalamazoo led by as many as nine after going on a 12-4 run over the course of five minutes. Adrian battled back to get within one with just over a minute left in the half before the Hornets closed out the half leading 31-27.
The second half opened much like the first as both teams traded baskets in the second half before the Bulldogs were able to go on a 9-0 run to take a 48-46 lead with just under six minutes left in the game. Kalamazoo battled back to take the lead as Adrian trailed by two with just under three minutes left. Junior Katie Ross (Clawson, Mich./Clawson) hit a three-pointer to give the Bulldogs a 51-50 lead with 2:55 to play. Both teams traded free throws as Adrian led 52-51 with just 1:20 to play. An Adrian turnover turned into a Kalamazoo three which give them the lead by two. Adrian was unable to get the game-tying basket as the Hornets hit four free throws to run out the game.
Ross led Adrian with 16 points, 12 of which came from behind the arc. Freshman LaQwana Dockery was one rebound shy of her first career double-double as she went for 13 points and nine boards. Junior Jenn Headley (Hicksville, Ohio/Hicksville) scored 10 points off the bench for the Bulldogs. Fellow junior Kellee Wonders (Pittsford, Mich./Hudson) added in eight points while grabbing nine rebounds. Sophomore Kayla Galecka (Ovid, Mich./Ovid-Elsie) contributed with six points while Nicole Boggs (Gibraltar, Mich./St. Mary's Catholic Central) added a game-high three assists. Freshman Senneca Scott (Livonia, Mich./Franklin) tied a career-high with eight rebounds on the afternoon.
Kalamazoo was led by Holly Cooperrider who scored almost half of the Hornets points alone as she had a game-high 28.
Today's game was Adrian College's annual WBCA PinkZone game where cancer survivors were recognized before the game and all monies raised were donated to the Bixby Hospital located in Adrian.
Adrian was solid from the free throw line throughout the game. The Bulldogs made a season-high 26 free throws, tied a season-high with 31 attempts and shot a season-high 83.9 from the charity stripe. Today's was the third time this season that three players scored in double figured for the Bulldogs.
The Bulldogs will host the third ranked Hope College on Wednesday, February 9 at 7:30 p.m.
