Men's Lacrosse Win Fourth Consecutive Opener 10-7

WASHINGTON – The Adrian College men's lacrosse team started their season off on the right step as they defeated Catholic University 10-7. The Bulldogs have won the season opener in each of the four years of the programs existence.

The Bulldogs got the ball rolling midway through the first period as junior David Monroe (Ann Arbor, Mich./Huron) scored at 7:53. Adrian would go on a roll with an onslaught of goals scoring three more times over the next 52 seconds. Goals by freshman Drake Dailey-Chwalibog (White Lake, Mich./St. Mary's) and juniors T.J. Cook (Caledon, Ont./Upper Canada College) and Tyler Tanguay (Port Colborne, Ont./Lakeshore Catholic) put Adrian up 4-0. The Cardinals would score a minute later during on a man-up opportunity as Adrian led 4-1 after the first period.

CUA scored the only goal of the second period as Adrian out-shot the Cardinals 10-9. Both teams traded early goals in the third period before Monroe and Cook scored again just 33 seconds apart. The Bulldogs and Cardinals would trade goals in the fourth period but Adrian's lead was too much for CUA, as they were never closer than three goals.

Monroe led the Bulldogs with five points (2 g, 3a) on the day. Cook led Adrian with a game-high three goals. Tanguay added in two goals and an assists while senior Josh Maluta (Naperville, Ill./Neuqua Valley) had a goal and an assist.

Sophomore Brandon MacDonald (Midhurst, Ont./Eastview Secondary School) led the Bulldogs with five groundballs recovered. Adam Hague (Hudsonville, Mich./Pope), a senior, and Ryan Werhane (Highland Park, Ill./Highland Park), a junior, each had picked up four groundballs.

In goal, junior Pat Gaeger (Elk Grove, Ill./Saint Viator) made 13 saves.

Catholic out-shot Adrian in the game 45-42, and had a 33-28 edge in groundballs recovered. The Bulldogs were 17-for-22 in clears. Adrian was also 2-7 in man-up opportunities.

The Bulldogs will take on St. John Fisher at 1:00 p.m. on March 3 in Warrrenton, Virginia.
