Box Score WESTERVILLE, Ohio – The Adrian College men's lacrosse team jumped out to an early lead over Otterbein University and never looked back as they won 19-9. The Bulldogs improved their record to 9-2 on the season.
Adrian netted the first three goals of the game before giving up two to the Cardinals, including one on a man-up opportunity, as they led just 3-2 at the end of the first period.
The Bulldogs and Cardinals traded goals to start the second before Adrian closed out the period netted four consecutive goals including one on a man-up advantage. Junior Tyler Tanguay (Port Colborne, Ont./Lakeshore Catholic) scored with just 20 seconds left in the period and sophomore Brandon MacDonald (Midhurst, Ont./Eastview Secondary School) netted a goal just six seconds later. The late run gave Adrian the led, 10-4 at the half.
Otterbein scored the first goal to open the second half but again the Bulldogs scored in bunches. Adrian answered with six unanswered goals including two each by juniors T.J. Cook (Caledon, Ont./Upper Canada College) and David Monroe (Ann Arbor, Mich./Huron).
Cook opened the final period by scoring his fourth goal of the game at 13:33. The Bulldogs would score two more goals in the period as Otterbein would net four to outscore Adrian in the final period.
Cook led all scorers with his four goals. Monroe netted a hat trick for the sixth time this season, while also dishing out an assist and picking up four groundballs. Tanguay, along with senior Ryan Knautz (Lake Forest, Ill./Lake Forest) and freshman Tom Thielman (Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial) each scored twice. Tanguay added two assists and four groundballs. Senior Josh Maluta (Naperville, Ill./Neuqua Valley) set a school record with seven assists while junior Mitch Barnard (Springwater Township, Ont./Eastview Secondary School) also set a school record with 16 groundballs recovered. Barnard also won 18 faceoffs, which is a career-high and ranks second all-time in team history.
The Bulldogs controlled the shots throughout the game as they held a 56-to-20 advantage, including outshooting in the Cardinals 21-to-3 in the second period. Adrian controlled the defensive side of the ball as they held a 50-to-24 groundball advantage and forced 18 Otterbein turnovers. Adrian held a 21-to-11 advantage in faceoffs won. The Bulldogs were 13-for-17 in clearing opportunities while the Cardinals were 17-for-19. Otterbein was a perfect 1-for-1 in man-up opportunities while Adrian was 1-for-2.
The 56 shots taken by Adrian ranks third all-time in school history. The 50 groundballs recovered by the team, ranks sixth all-time, trying a mark they had last year when they hosted Otterbein at Performance Stadium.
Adrian will travel to MLC opponent Aurora on April 16 for a 2:00 pm game.
