Box Score AURORA, Ill. – The Adrian College men's lacrosse team used three, four goal periods to hold off Aurora University 13-9 in a Midwest Lacrosse Conference (MLC) game. The Bulldogs are now 10-2 on the season and 5-0 in conference play.
The Bulldogs netted three goals in the last three minutes of the first period to take an early 4-2 lead. Junior David Monroe (Ann Arbor, Mich./Huron) scored twice in the opening period, coming at 3:41 and 1:29.
Aurora battled back as they scored the first three goals of the second period, including two just four second apart as they took the lead at 5-4. The Bulldogs refused to give in as they scored four unanswered goals to end the half, including two by Junior Tyler Tanguay (Port Colborne, Ont./Lakeshore Catholic), as Adrian led 8-5.
Tanguay netted a man-down goal at 10:15 of the third period as Adrian again outscored the Spartans 4-2 in the period. Junior T.J. Cook (Caledon, Ont./Upper Canada College) ended to period as he scored his 25th goal of the season as time expired.
The Spartans attempted a comeback late in the final period as they scored the final two goals of the period and held the Bulldogs to only one.
Tanguay led Adrian with a game-high four goals and six points, while picking up five groundballs. Monroe netted his third-consecutive hat trick while also dishing out an assist. Senior Josh Maluta (Naperville, Ill./Neuqua Valley) scored four points (2 goals and 2 assists). Sophomore Brandon MacDonald (Midhurst, Ont./Eastview Secondary School) led the Bulldogs with a game-high seven groundballs.
In goal for the Bulldogs, freshman Kevin Lerg (Farmington Hills, Mich./Detroit Catholic Central) made his first start of the year earning the win while making eight saves.
On the afternoon, Adrian outshot the Spartans 47-to-30. The Bulldogs had a significant advantage in groundballs recovered as Adrian led 43-to-27. The Bulldogs and Spartans nearly split the faceoffs as Aurora held a 12-to-11 advantage. Both squads had 34 clearing opportunities as Adrian was able to clear 29 times while the Spartans successfully cleared 28 times. Adrian was shutout for the first time this season on man-up opportunities as they went 0-for-4, while the Spartans were 1-for-6.
Adrian will travel to Concordia (WI) on April 16 for another MLC game starting at 2:00 pm.
