Men's Lacrosse Fall in NCAA Tournament 8-7 in Overtime

SPRINGFIELD, Ohio – It was a hard way to end their season as the Adrian College men's lacrosse team fell in overtime 8-7 to #15 Wittenberg University in the Bulldogs first appearance in the NCAA tournament. The Bulldogs finish their season 15-3 setting a school record for wins in a season.

The Bulldogs got on the board quickly as junior Mitch Barnard (Springwater Township, Ont./Eastview Secondary) won the opening faceoff. Barnard dished the ball off and just nine second into the game junior Tyler Tanguay (Port Colborne, Ont./Lakeshore Catholic) found sophomore T.J. Cook (Caledon, Ont./Upper Canada College) for the first goal of the game.

Adrian jumped out to an early 2-0 lead after Barnard again won the opening draw but this time it was senior Josh Maluta (Naperville, Ill./Neuqua Valley) that found Tanguay for the goal at 13:27 of the first. Sophomore Jeff Ulfig (Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial) found the back of the net to give the bulldogs a three goal lead.  Just 59 seconds later Tanguay scored his second goal of the period on a assist from junior David Monroe (Ann Arbor, Mich./Huron) to put the Bulldogs out in front 4-0. The Tigers finally got on the board at 8:44 of the quarter.  Wittenberg would add two more goals to end the period with the Bulldogs still leading 4-3.

Defense dominated the second period as neither team was able to get many good looks at the net. It wasn't until 4:46 left in the period when sophomore John Hudzinski (Blaine, Minn./Centennial) found the back of the net for his seventh goal in the last three games. The Tigers pulled within one with just 15 seconds left in the half as the Bulldogs led 5-4 at the intermission.

Wittenberg came out and scored first in the third quarter just 1:12 into the period. Adrian answered back at 11:03 on a goal by Monroe. The Tigers would again tie the game with 9:47 left in the period. Defense again played a big role in the final quarter as both teams scored just once with Wittenberg making the first strike at 8:51 of the quarter. The Bulldogs tied the game on a goal by Maluta with just 3:07 left in the game to send it into overtime.

The Bulldogs played their first overtime game of the season as Adrian and Wittenberg were tied 7-7. The lone shot attempt by the Bulldogs in the four-minute overtime period was by Tanguay with about a minute and a half into the extra session. After calling a timeout, Wittenberg scored just eight seconds later off a shot from Matt Lord that went to the far side of the net and ending the Bulldogs season.

Freshman Matthew Neal (Shelby Twp., Mich./De La Salle) played one of his best games all season, despite earning the loss, making a season-high 17 saves between the pipes.

Cook led the Bulldogs with two goals. Tanguay, Maluta and Monroe each had a goal and an assist. Barnard led the Bulldogs with a game-high six groundballs and two caused turnovers.

For the game, Wittenberg outshot the Bulldogs 47-to-34. The Tigers held a slim 25-to-24 advantage in groundballs recovered over Adrian. The two teams split the faceoffs won at 9-to-9. Adrian was 14-for-19 in clearing opportunities while Wittenberg was 15-for-18 in chances. Neither team was able to score on their man-up opportunities as the Bulldogs were 0-for-2 while the Tigers were 0-for-3.
