Fannell Powers Bulldogs to Impressive 13-10 Win over Illinois Wesleyan

Box Score

ADRIAN, Mich. – What goes around comes around is a saying that one hears from time to time. In the case of the Adrian College men's lacrosse team, when you give up a big lead you also have the ability to make a comeback of your own. Earlier this week, the team suffered its first loss when Kenyon rallied in the fourth quarter. On Saturday, the Bulldogs staged their own comeback against Illinois Wesleyan. Adrian trailed 10-6 entering the fourth quarter and scored all seven goals in the final 15 minutes for a 13-10 win over the Titans.

Sophomore attack Eric Fannell did just what his position reads with seven goals and one assist on the afternoon. He netted four fourth-quarter goals including a pair in the final 3:42 which sealed the victory. Doug Boyd got the comeback started at the 13:16 mark to get within three. Fannell scored at 9:51 and 8:29 both from A.J. Smith to cut the lead down to 10-9. Cody Schmitt made a tremendous defensive play with a caused turnover near midfield and scooped up the ball. He raced all the way to the goal and tied the game with 7:15 remaining on his third goal of the season. Brett Maguire would score the game-winning goal with 5:26 left on a shot from some distance straight on the cage.

Adrian also had a very productive first quarter with five goals and led 5-4 after one quarter. Fannell scored three times in the first while Smith and Maguire also had a tally. Adrian was then silenced over the next two quarters with just one goal. Matt Scherer scored with 8:22 left in the second while the Titans scored six times to build their 10-6 lead.

Adrian led 29-28 in total shots and outshot the Titans 18-7 in the second half. Illinois Wesleyan committed 11 of their 16 turnovers in the second half allowing for the comeback attempt. Adrian also won the overall face-off battle for the second straight game going 15-for-27. Brett Farrelly had another steady effort in net for the Bulldogs with nine saves. Schmitt won nine face-offs and collected five ground balls. Max Groves had a team-high six ground balls for Adrian.
