Freshman Sadia Johnson Pours in Game-High 19 Points in Close Setback at Calvin for Women's Basketball

Box Score

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich.--The visiting Adrian College women's basketball team gave one of the top teams in the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association a scare on Wednesday evening, but Calvin College was able to fend off a pesky Bulldogs squad for a 64-58 win.

THE BASICS
Final Score: Calvin 64, Adrian 58

Location: Grand Rapids, Mich. ; Van Noord Arena

Records: Calvin Knights 13-2 overall, 5-2 MIAA ; Adrian Bulldogs 7-7 overall, 3-4 MIAA

TOP 'DAWGS
= Freshman Sadia Johnson scored a game-high 19 points on 6-for-15 field goal shooting and 7-for-8 from the free throw line.

= Classmate Shannon Garvey added 13 points and five rebounds, tying for the team lead.

= Sophomore Katie Crawford got her first MIAA start this season, responding with four points and a team-best five rebounds.

= Senior Brigitte Zavithsanos had four of the team's six steals.

THE OPPOSITION
Ali Spayde led Calvin with 17 points and had three steals.

Anna Timmer posted a double-double of 15 points and game-best 15 rebounds, plus stuffed the statsheet with three assists and five steals.

= Bre Luurtsema also chipped in 15 points.

HOW IT HAPPENED
= Calvin broke open a close game--which featured eight ties and seven lead changes--by taking the third quarter, 27-16, for a 48-40 lead going into the final 10 minutes.

= After a Kennedy Kunce jumper that tied the score 33-33 midway through the third quarter, Calvin finished the stanza on a 15-7 run over a span of 5 minutes and 17 seconds. Spayde scored six points during that key stretch.

= Calvin led throughout the fourth, building a double-digit cushion at 55-45 on a Lauren Goldthorpe (7 points) trey at 7:47 on the clock. Then Timmer made a lay-in to make it 57-47 about two minutes later.

= Adrian, however, eventually clawed back to within a couple possessions--both times with Johnson leading the way. At the 3:29 mark, she converted a traditional three-point play when she was fouled while making the lay-up to make it 57-55 to close an 8-0 run. And with 11 seconds left, she scored on a lay-in to make the score 62-58 in favor of the Knights.

= Adrian was forced to foul on Calvin's next possession and Spayde calmly knocked down two free throws to seal the win.

= The Bulldogs started hot, taking early leads of 7-0 and 13-7 to end the first quarter. Adrian also held a slim lead at halftime, 24-21.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
= The four-game losing streak is the longest for the Bulldogs in 2016-17.

= Zavithsanos' four steals are her most since five thefts on Nov. 22, 2014, versus Ohio Northern.

= Adrian has had back-to-back games of 25 turnovers--which has been uncharacteristic for a side that has been one of the best in NCAA Division III in protecting the ball for much of the season.

UP NEXT
= Adrian steps out of MIAA play in its next outing on Saturday, when the Bulldogs travel to Independent Illinois Tech in Chicago. Opening tip is scheduled for 4 p.m. Eastern Video Live stats
