Pitching Carries @AdrianBaseball as Bulldogs Complete Four-Game Sweep of Albion

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

ALBION, Mich.--The Adrian College baseball team got terrific pitching performances from two starters and three relievers on Sunday to sweep both ends of a Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association doubleheader from host Albion College, 8-0 and 7-2.

THE BASICS
= Final Scorelines: Game 1--Adrian 8-14-0, Albion 0-3-0; Game 2--Adrian 7-9-3, Albion 2-8-5

= Location: Champions Stadium, Albion, Mich.; Weather: Sunny, 70 degrees, Wind 3 mph

= Records: Adrian Bulldogs 24-8 overall/17-3 MIAA; Albion Britons 13-17 overall/6-14 MIAA

TOP 'DAWGS
= Sophomore Jason Schroeder (W, 5-0) and senior Kyle Shepherd combined on the three-hit shutout in Game 1.

= Senior Ryan Dorow was 4-for-9, including a double and triple, two runs scored and three runs batted in during the afternoon.

= Senior Brian Killinger went 5-for-8 on the day, with three runs and two RBI.

= Senior Ian Mikowski scored six runs, had five hits in eight at-bats and stole seven bases in the two games.

= Sophomore Dugan Darnell and freshman Gunner Rainey added three hits apiece during the twinbill.

= Freshman Spencer Ford (W, 3-0) got the Game 2 victory in relief, scattering seven hits and two runs over 3-1/3 innings.

THE OPPOSITION

= James Spilko was 2-for-3 in the first game and Riley Stesiak had the Britons' other hit.

= TJ Bowers and Spilko had a double apiece in the nightcap.

HOW IT HAPPENED, Game 1
= Like yesterday, Adrian jumped out to a quick start with three runs in the top of the first inning. Junior Hunter Hayes walked with the bases loaded, Darnell was hit by a pitch with the bases re-loaded and Rainey hit into a double play that scored another run.

= In the sixth, Dorow singled to left field to bring home two runs to make it 5-0.

= In the next frame, Hayes had a two-run single up the middle to close the scoring.

= Schroeder walked one, struck out five batters and allowed just two singles in 6-2/3 innings of work.

HOW IT HAPPENED, Game 2
= Killinger snapped a 2-2 tie with a RBI-single up the middle to spark a four-run seventh inning. Dorow followed with a double down the left field line to plate Killinger. The Bulldogs added two insurance runs on a Britons error.

= Shepherd picked up the save after coming into the game in the bottom of the eighth inning, inheriting two runners on base and no outs. Shepherd got his first batter faced Bowers to line out to right field before pinch-hitter Logan Priebe singled through the left side to load the bases. But the tall, hard-throwing right-hander struck out Joe Turnbull and Spilko to escape the jam and preserve the shutout.

= Trailing 2-0 in the bottom of the fifth, Albion knotted it with a pair of runs on a RBI-single by Ronnie Williams and RBI-groundout from Jordyn Finney.

= Adrian forged a two-run lead with sacrifice flies off the bats of Killinger in the first and junior Frank Resto in the fourth.

= The Britons had their scoring chances, but ended with 12 runners left on base.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
= The Bulldogs outscored the Britons 42 to 6 during the four-game series.

= Adrian has won seven of the past eight meetings, but Albion still leads all-time, 103-67.

= Mikowski tops the MIAA with a .483 batting average and ranks second with 25 stolen bases.

= With 55 under his belt, he also needs three stolen bases to surpass Alex Cowart (57 from 2007-10) for first place on the Adrian all-time list.

= Dorow takes over the MIAA lead with 40 RBI.

UP NEXT
= Adrian will begin a four-game weekend MIAA series against Trine on the road on Friday in Angola, Ind., as the doubleheader starts at 2 p.m. Then on Saturday, the series concludes at Adrian's Nicolay Field with a twinbill; first-pitch at 1 p.m.
