Women's Basketball Can't Find Rhythm at Second-Ranked Hope College

HOLLAND, Mich.--Senior Ashley Morris posted game highs of 18 points and nine rebounds, and sophomore Sha'Trice Graves added a game-best six blocked shots, but it wasn't enough as Adrian lost its Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association women's basketball opener to nationally top-5 ranked Hope, 88-50, on Wednesday.

Records: Hope Flying Dutch 4-0 overall, 1-0 MIAA; Adrian Bulldogs 4-3 overall, 0-1 MIAA 

National Rankings: Hope College is No. 2 by the Women's Basketball Coaches Association (188 points, 1 first-place vote) and No. 2 in the D3hoops.com (580, 3) poll.

TOP 'DAWGS
= Morris also had three assists and a steal.

= Graves (4 points) matched Morris with nine rebounds and had a season-high three steals.  

THE OPPOSITION
= Lauren Newman (5-for-8) and Olivia Voskuil (4-for-5) led Hope with 12 and 11 points, respectively.

= Reserves Rose Thompson, Jess Moorman, Ashleigh Thomas and Voskuil (3 blocks) shared the team lead with four rebounds apiece.

= Francesca Buchanan (9 points) and Schoonveld (4) both led all student-athletes with four steals.

HOW IT HAPPENED
= Adrian committed a season-high 35 turnovers that Hope turned in to 33 points and shot only 35.3 percent from the field (18-51).

= Hope's depth showed with 50 bench points (Adrian had 19), 16 Flying Dutch in the lineup had at least one point and 12 had at least one rebound.

= Junior Shannon Garvey (9 points, 3 rebounds) gave the Bulldogs their only lead at 3-2 when she drained a three-pointer from the left elbow with 7 minutes and 31 seconds left in the first quarter.

= But the Flying Dutch made their next three field goals to take a 10-3 lead at the 6:14 mark. Hope finished the quarter on a 17-12 run to go up 27-15 after 10 minutes.

= Hope began the second stanza on a 13-5 run to take a commanding 40-20 lead and Adrian couldn't get the deficit under double-digits after that.

= The Flying Dutch held a slim 45-42 edge in rebounding.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
= Hope has won 44 straight meetings and now leads the all-time series over Adrian, 68-32.

= Graves' six blocks are the second-most in a conference game in Bulldogs history, behind Emilee Davidson's seven at Saint Mary's College, Feb. 10, 2016. Jasmine Byers also had six versus Alma College on Jan. 25, 2012.

UP NEXT
= Adrian will be idle this weekend before having its MIAA home opener against Alma next Wednesday (7:30 p.m.) in the Merillat Sport & Fitness Center.
