Strong Defense Leads to First Victory for Men's Lacrosse; Edges Calvin 5-4

ADRIAN, Mich.--Senior Michael Turner factored into all but one of the Bulldogs goals, senior keeper Peter Dugan made nine saves and sophomore Brayden Adrian came up with a crucial caused turnover, as Adrian College held on to turn back visiting Calvin College, 5-4, in Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association men's lacrosse action on Wednesday evening.

THE BASICS
= Final Score: Adrian 5, Calvin 4

= Location: Docking Stadium, Adrian, Mich.; Weather conditions: Showers, 37 degrees, Wind ENE 7 mph

= Records: Adrian Bulldogs--1-10 overall, 1-3 MIAA; Calvin Knights--3-11 overall, 0-4 MIAA

TOP 'DAWGS
= Turner scored a pair of goals and assisted on two others. He also had two caused turnovers.

= Adrian led all student-athletes with a career-high 10 ground balls, plus an important caused turnover to preserve the victory. He also went 6-for-9 in the face-off "X."

= Dugan had two ground balls and made several stops from point-blank range.

= Freshman Fernando Rodriguez added three points on two goals and an assist.

= Sophomore Isiah Dehn had a career-best four caused turnovers.

THE OPPOSITION
= Michael Winkler led the Calvin offense two points on a goal and an assist. 

= Austin Bontreger, Griffin Sparling and Max Foster also scored for the Knights.

= Goalie Mitchell Wong was credited with eight saves.

= Ethan Brown led the Knights' defense with six ground balls and a game-best five caused turnovers.  

HOW IT HAPPENED
= Adrian checked Noah Boelens on Calvin's final possession near the attacking cage and scooped up the ground ball to start a Bulldogs clear attempt, and his teammates ran out the clock to preserve the first victory of the season.

= After a Knights timeout with 1 minute and 17 seconds left in the contest, Calvin had three possessions at a chance to get the game-tying goal and force overtime. Two shots went wide and Adrian forced the turnover with 23 seconds to go.

= Turner scored the only goal of the final quarter on a feed from Rodriguez with 9:35 remaining.

= At 5:56 of the third, Bontreger scored the lone tally of the stanza from Winkler to make it a 4-4 game.

= Turner gave Adrian a 3-2 lead to start the second half before Foster came up with a forced turnover in front of the AC cage and in one motion shot in the tying goal, 3-3, at 8:41 to go on the clock.

= Rodriguez, however, put the Bulldogs up again by a goal, 4-3, 97 seconds later. Turner was working the offense from behind the cage and fed Rodriguez who was cutting down the alley for the second time tonight.

= The teams traded two goals in the opening quarter. Adrian led 2-0 on goals from Rodriguez and freshman Kyle Sanderson before Calvin equalized with Sparling and Winkler on man-up.

= Calvin did enjoy statistical advantages in shots (36-18), shots on goal (13-8) and turnovers (23-32), but Adrian led in ground balls (32-22) and face-off wins (10-3).  

= Leading 5-4, Adrian had a chance to get an insurance goal in the last five minutes but committed four turnovers.

BEYOND THE BOXSCORE
= The Bulldogs have never lost to Calvin in six all-time meetings, including 3-0 at home.

= The teams combined for the lowest-scoring game in their history against each other, snapping 19 goals accomplished twice.

= Turner pushed past the 100-point plateau in a Black and Gold uniform, recording 103 on 53 goals and 50 assists.

= Senior Michael Desmadryl earned five more ground balls to give him 127 for his career--10 away from fourth place in Bulldogs history. He also moves past Max Groves (2014-15) for fourth with 47 career caused turnovers. 

= Classmate Greg Stewart also had five ground balls and one caused turnover tonight, upping his career totals to 59 and 30--tying Mitch Barnard (2010-12) for the ninth-most caused turnovers in AC history.

= Adrian snaps an 11-game losing streak dating back to last season.

= The four goals allowed by the Adrian defense is the fewest since last season (Kalamazoo and Muskingum, three.)
