Men's Lacrosse Comeback Bid Falls Short in First Meeting with Visiting Dubuque

ADRIAN, Mich.--Freshman Chris French and sophomore Fernando Rodriguez each recorded a hat trick, but Adrian's comeback bid fell just shy after trailing Dubuque early in a 14-9 non-conference men's lacrosse loss on Tuesday.

THE BASICS

= Records: Dubuque Panthers 1-3, Adrian Bulldogs 1-4

TOP 'DAWGS
= French added two assists for a five-point night to tie all scorers to go along with five ground balls.

= Freshman Max Leventis shined in the face-off "X" by winning 20-of-26 draws and scooping up 15 ground balls.

= Classmate Peyton Gasche contributed two goals and an assist.

THE OPPOSITION
= Dominic Mulcahy had four goals and an assist while Tanner Weis matched him with five points on three goals and two assists.

= Davis Behrns and Jake Herman added three and two goals, respectively.

= Samuel Kopecky (W, 1-1) made 16 saves in the UD cage.

= Andre Wagner led the team with seven ground balls.   

HOW IT HAPPENED
= The Spartans jumped out to a 6-2 lead in the first quarter after Rodriguez scored, unassisted, to put the Bulldogs up 1-0 with 10 minutes and 32 seconds to go.

= Trailing 7-3 at halftime, Adrian, however, fought back in the third quarter by outscoring Dubuque 5-3 to pull within 10-8 after 45 minutes.

= Senior Morgan Caldwell scored man-up at 10:41 to start a 4-0 Adrian run that turned the Bulldogs' deficit from 9-3 to a manageable 9-7 situation.

= The Bulldogs had a golden chance to cut further into the lead with two two-man-up opportunities in the fourth quarter, but couldn't cash in.

= The Spartans iced the win with a 4 to 1 fourth quarter to put the final margin of victory at five goals.  

= Dubuque went 3-for-4 on man-up chances and held a slight edge in shots, 43-38.

BEYOND THE BOXSCORE
= Dubuque and Adrian were meeting for the first time.

= Adrian freshman defender Christian Aurand earlier in the day was named to the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association Division III National Team of the Week. 

UP NEXT
= Adrian will host another first-time opponent in La Roche at 1 p.m. Sunday.
