'Berg Pulls Away from Men's Lacrosse in Third Quarter to Win, 15-10

TIFFIN, Ohio--Freshmen Peyton Gasche and Travis Fox led visiting Adrian with four points apiece, but Heidelberg outscored the Bulldogs 7-2 in the third quarter to pull away in the second half for a 15-10 victory in non-conference men's lacrosse action on Wednesday.

= Records: Heidelberg Student Princes 3-4 overall, Adrian Bulldogs 2-5 overall

TOP 'DAWGS
= Gasche finished with a game-high-tying four goals, while Fox posted a goal and three assists.

= Freshman Chris French (1 assist) and sophomore Fernando Rodriguez posted two goals apiece.

= Freshman Christian Aurand led the defense with six ground balls and three caused turnovers.

= Fellow freshman defender Matt Endres scooped up six ground balls. 

= Classmate Max Leventis posted a team-high eight ground balls.

= Freshman goalie Max Bade tied his career high with 14 saves and he had three ground balls.

THE OPPOSITION
= Patrick McCarthy led all scorers with five points on four goals and an assist.

= Alex Bruder also had a game-high-tying four goals to go along with five ground balls.

= Hunter Edwards had a game-high 11 ground balls.

= Jaydon Septer won 19-of-28 face-offs and had nine ground balls.

= Brock Hodson added four points on three goals and an assist, and Liam Weaver scored twice. 

= Ryan Sinnema produced four ground balls, four caused turnovers and a goal.

= Eli Allen (W, 2-4) got the win in the cage with seven stops and he contributed three ground balls.

HOW IT HAPPENED
= Leading just 6-5 at halftime, Heidelberg opened the game up by scoring the first six goals of the third quarter to take a commanding 12-5 lead. McCarthy scored two unassisted goals 73 seconds apart to help spark the 6-0 run. 

= Gasche scored a pair of man-up tallies in even quicker fashion 31 seconds apart to pull Adrian to within 13-7 after three quarters.

= The Student Princes also held statistical advantages in ground balls (51-33), face-off wins (19-10), shots (48-21) and shots on goal (29-17).

= In the fourth quarter, Adrian outscored the 'Berg 3-2--including two more man-up goals by Gasche and sophomore co-captain Kyle Sanderson--but the Bulldogs didn't have enough time to complete a comeback.

= Things started well for Adrian which went up 2-0 just 19 seconds after the opening face-off off the stick of French and by Rodriguez 57 seconds later.

= Liam Weaver put the Student Princes on the scoreboard with 10 minutes and 42 seconds left in the opening quarter and Bruder tied it 41 seconds later.

= Then at 9:15, McCarthy gave HU its first lead before French equalized, 3-3, exactly four minutes later.

= With 4:42 remaining, Hunter Edwards scored unassisted to give the 'Berg the lead, 4-3, and they never looked back after that.

BEYOND THE BOXSCORE
= The Bulldogs take over the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association lead with 19 man-up goals, after going 4-for-7 this afternoon.

= Heidelberg takes a 2-1 all-time series lead, with wins in each of the past two seasons.

= French already has 25 goals and 46 points to pace the Bulldogs, surpassing last season's goal scorer who had 19 and top point producer who had 31.

UP NEXT
= Adrian returns home to Kapnick Field at Docking Stadium at 1 p.m. Saturday to square off against Mount Saint Joseph, starting at 1 p.m.
