Men's Lacrosse Bested by Calvin Knights on the Road, 19-6

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich.--Host Calvin took a 4-1 lead after the first quarter and increased the advantage to 12-2 by halftime en route to a 19-6 victory over Adrian in Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association men's lacrosse action on Wednesday evening.

THE BASICS

= Records: Calvin Knights 9-6 overall (2-2 MIAA); Adrian Bulldogs 3-8 overall (0-3 MIAA)

TOP 'DAWGS
= Freshmen co-captain Chris French led Adrian's offense with two goals and an assist for three total points.

= Classmate Max Leventis was 14-for-28 in the face-off "X" and collected a team-high seven ground balls.

= Sophomore Jordan Oshowy joined French with a multi-point game on a goal and an assist.

= Classmates Fernando Rodriguez, team co-captain Kyle Sanderson and freshman Peyton Gasche also found the back of the cage.

= Sophomore goalie Nick Rizzo made nine saves and had two ground balls in his first career start.

THE OPPOSITION
= Max Foster led all student-athletes with four goals and six points.

= Noah Boelens added five points on two goals and three assists.

= Austin Bontreger registered a hat trick and Jacob Gandara, Griffin Sparling and Nick Dueweke chipped in two goals each.

= Chase Sparling dished four assists and scored a goal. He also went 15-for-27 on face-offs and scooped up a game-best 11 ground balls. 

= Gerrit Kurtycz (W, 8-5) made 13 saves and posted five ground balls.

HOW IT HAPPENED
= Calvin held small advantages in statistical advantages including ground balls (38-32), face-off wins (15-14), shots (46-36) and shots on goal (28-19).

= Gandara scored just 18 seconds in after the Knights won the opening face-off.

= Nick Pitre tallied unassisted and Foster scored man-up to extend Calvin's lead to 3-0 before Gasche got Adrian on the scoreboard with 4 minutes and 46 seconds remaining in the first quarter.

= The Knights scored nine of the game's next 10 goals to take control, 12-2, going into halftime.

= The Bulldogs outscored Calvin 4-3 in the fourth quarter, but the deficit was too great to overcome. Rodriguez man-up, Sanderson, French man-down and Oshowy scored for Adrian.

BEYOND THE BOXSCORE
= Adrian fell to Calvin for the first time in seven meetings. 

= The Knights' 19 goals are their most against the Bulldogs.

= French breaks a tie with Gasche for the team lead with 52 points.

= With 132 ground balls on the season, Leventis inches closer to Mitch Barnard's school record of 146, set in 2012.

= Adrian hosts Hope College on Senior Day Saturday (4 p.m.) at Kapnick Field at Docking Stadium.
