ADRIAN, Mich. - This week, the Adrian women's basketball team will work into the final month of the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association regular-season. After having played six of their last seven games on the road, the Bulldogs (6-12, 3-7 MIAA) are now on track to complete five of next six contests at home.
This shortened week for the black and gold begins on Monday evening against Alma College in a game that was originally slated to take place back on January 19.
The Scots (10-7, 4-4 MIAA) emerged from a 12-day hiatus on Saturday afternoon, defeating Kalamazoo, 68-51 to move one game above 0.500 on the road.
Sophomore Taylor Sas (15.8 points per game) sits only one slot ahead of Adrian's
Chelsea Palmer (14.1) in the league's scoring-title race, and while the Bulldog senior holds a near-seven percent edge on Sas in overall field-goal percentage, the Scots' leading-scorer is also their leading three-point shooter at 35.0 percent. Palmer, on the other hand, has yet to attempt a three-point shot in her three-year career.
It does not stop at scoring for Sas. She is also second on the team to Kendall Griffioen (7.1) in rebounding with 5.8 per game, and tied with Maddie Robbins with 1.1 steals per outing.
As a team, Alma ranks second-to-last in the MIAA with 35.7 total rebounds per game, only 2.5 boards ahead of Olivet.
The Comets (2-16, 0-10 MIAA) have dropped nine-straight dating back to early-December, including a 67-57 loss to Adrian back on January 5 in Olivet.
The team has dealt with scoring woes this season, having been held to 41 points or fewer in each of its last four games.
In the season's first meeting with the 'Dogs, Zoee Zatarga led Olivet with 16 points and 10 rebounds, while Rachel Swartz added seven points, six blocks and 10 boards of her own.
Swartz, a junior actively leads the conference with a 2.7 blocking average, and has swatted away four or more blocks in six different games this season.
Despite the duo's performance, it was not enough to overshadow coincidental double-double efforts by Palmer and
Makayla Clement, who just this weekend each cracked the 20-point threshold in a win at Saint Mary's.
Behind Palmer, Clement is averaging 8.2 points per game, including a 9.1 mark so far in the month of January.
The freshman leads the locals with 25 total steals, while also ranking second in rebounds and blocks, and third in assists.
Kiaya Warner and
Kiara Wernette lead Adrian with 34 and 33 assists, respectively.
Both of this week's games are scheduled to broadcasted through Adrian College Television's YouTube channel, and live stats will be available on adrianbulldogs.com
