FARMINGTON HILLS, Mich. – The Adrian College Men's ACHA Division 1 hockey team met Davenport University in the GLCHL Playoff Semifinal game on Friday night at the Farmington Hills Ice Arena, where they battled to a 3-2 win, advancing to the Championship game on Saturday.
The #1 seed Bulldogs defeated #8 seed Toledo on Wednesday night, while the #5 seed Panthers of Davenport defeated #4 seed Grand Valley on Thursday night to set up Friday's first of two GLCHL semifinal contests.
Adrian opened the scoring in the first period on a goal from
Matthew DiCesare, assisted by
Matteo DiGiulio and
Sheldon Nolan, before Davenport quickly answered back to tie it at one going into the intermission.
The Panthers would open the second period with a goal off a turnover, but the Bulldogs answered right back after a handful of high-pressure shifts, tying it at two in the 16
th minute of the second thanks to
Sam Spaedt, assisted by
Ethan McLaughlin and
Sebastian Smith. After a scoreless remainder of the period, the two teams head for the third period tied again.
A one-sided third period saw the Bulldogs tack on over fifteen shots, bringing their total to 48 on the night. The Bulldogs offensive zone pressure eventually led to a power play, where
Sebastian Smith broke the tie, potting one while up a man to put the Bulldogs up by one with just over a minute to play. Nolan and
Dylan Gajewski provided the helpers on the game-winning tally. Adrian would eventually hold off Davenport in the final minute to secure the victory and their trip to tomorrow's GLCHL Conference Championship game. Goaltender
Noah Decottignies made 24 saves in the victory.
The #1 seed Bulldogs will face off against #2 seed Purdue Northwest after they shushed #3 seed Calvin in the other semifinal game. The Bulldogs blanked Purdue Northwest twice earlier this season and will look to clinch their ninth GLCHL Playoff Championship on Saturday at 5:30 PM in Farmington Hills.
