ADRIAN, Mich. -- When one thinks of
Adrian College Men's Lacrosse, they think of hard work, togetherness, trust in one another, and the constant pursuit of excellence; values and objectives that define the program and any athlete or coach that comes through it. Although, now that the 2025 season has ended its course, they can add the perpetual legacies of graduating stars
Michael Jonas,
Cameron Reed, and
Sam Spangler to the list of commodities that scurry across one's mind when Adrian College Men's Lacrosse is brought up in any sort of conversation.
Heading into their Senior seasons and their final in a Bulldog uniform, all-stars
Michael Jonas,
Cameron Reed, and
Sam Spangler had already made a significant impact on the program. Contributing immensely to the Adrian College Men's Lacrosse success over their first three seasons, the trio of Bulldogs made names for themselves not only through the value of their individual play towards the team's success, but through their ability to utterly dominate the program record books; Jonas on attack, Reed on defense, and Spangler in goal.
Jonas, a native of Holland, Michigan, came to Adrian College from Holland West Ottawa High School in 2021 and it didn't take long for the local product to produce at alarming rates. As a Freshman, Jonas tallied 37 goals and 61 points over his first 17 contests as a Bulldog. With one season under his belt, the skilled attackman then followed it up by tallying 54 goals, good for one shy of the program record at the time, as well as 75 points to earn his first All-MIAA accolade. In 2024, Jonas, who had been climbing the ranks of the program record books already, put together a stellar Junior season, scoring 31 goals and 71 points in 16 games played and collecting his second-straight All-MIAA award. By this time, Jonas had already secured two spots inside the program's top-ten for most points in a single season with 71 and 75, not to mention his standing near the top of many other all-time statistical categories. With one season to go, the star-studded presence up front was bound to continue to climb; if not overtake the thrown.
The 2025 Adrian College Men's Lacrosse season was destined for greatness, as Jonas was just shy of breaking a handful of program records. With just a few goals, assists, shots, and other statistical marks remaining on his to-do list, Jonas was ready to overtake the Bulldog greats that established themselves before him; and he did just that.
In his fourth and final season, Jonas continued to take over offensively and helped carry the Bulldogs to a memorable season that saw them finish as the No. 2 seed in the conference for the first time since 2015. In 18 games, Jonas dominated with a career-high 67 goals, 45 assists, 112 points, and a 6.22 points-per-game average, all of which set new single-season program records for each category. Amid that production, Jonas also added a 12-point game back on April 3 to become the first Bulldog to accomplish that feat and eventually took over the program's top spot for career points, goals, assists, shots on goal, games played, and games started. The record-breaking season earned Jonas his third consecutive All-MIAA honor and his first Conference Offensive Player of the Year award.
Not only was Jonas making noise in the Adrian College sports realm, but his statistical mastery was also recognized on the national level as his numbers sat in the top five of numerous different Division III men's lacrosse categories for several weeks in the season; most notably goals, points, points-per-game, and shooting percentage. On April 2, Jonas earned his first-career USILA DIII National Team of the Week honor after an 11-point performance against Illinois Wesleyan.
All together in 2025, Jonas established eleven new Adrian College Men's Lacrosse records and now holds thirteen different marks in the program's record book:
Career Points – (319)
Career Goals – (189)
Career Assists – (130)
Career Shots on Goal – (305)
Career Games Played – (68)
Career Games Started – (68)
Individual Single Season Points – (112)
Individual Single Season Points/Game – (6.22)
Individual Single Season Goals – (67)
Individual Single Season Assists – (45)
Individual Single Season Shots on Goal – (96)
Individual Single Game Points – (12) on 4/3/25
Individual Single Game Assists – (8) on 4/23/24
Cameron Reed graduated from Sir John A. McDonald Secondary School in 2021 and brought his talents to Adrian College for the 2022 season. The Waterloo, Ontario, Canada native was recruited for his value and size on the back end and instantly made an impact on Adrian's defensive game.
As a Freshman, Reed was a force on defense and stole the program's top spot for caused turnovers in a single season, tallying 37 in his first campaign. Over the next three seasons, Reed broke his own record, over and over again, and now holds the top four seats in the individual single season caused turnovers column, with his Senior season mark of 55 standing at the top. Reed produced at a 3.06 CT/game rate in 2025, which also broke a program record.
With his name scattered across the defensive portion of the Adrian College Men's Lacrosse record book, Reed graduates atop the career caused turnovers column with 182 total; 68 more than the next Bulldog. That same number also slid him into the all-time top ten for NCAA Division III men's lacrosse, something that no other Bulldog has ever managed in any statistical category. Adding to his value in the transition, Reed also played a constant role in the ground ball game, picking up 287 over his career, good enough for third place in Adrian's record book.
As much as Reed was relied on for his defense, he also sprinkled in some clutch offense, scoring and setting up some crucial goals for Adrian in games where they needed some secondary production. Over his Bulldog tenure, Reed tallied 28 goals and 15 assists for 43 points, including a career-high 12 goals and 17 points as a Senior.
Reed was an All-MIAA honoree for all four of his seasons as a Bulldog, landing on the Second Team once, and the First Team three times. Deservedly so, Reed earned his first Conference Defensive Player of the Year award in 2025; an award he most definitely could and probably should have captured more than once.
Production and consistency aren't the only things that come along with the names Reed and Jonas, as longevity and consistency do too. The duo became the only Bulldogs in program history to start and play every single game over their careers, as each of them did so in 68 contests from 2022-2025, never missing from the starting lineup. The mark leaves them atop of both categories for the program, tied with each other for career starts and tied with fellow Bulldogs Tom Thielman ('14) and
Riley Edwards ('25) for career games played.
It would be hard to argue against the fact that the recent success of Adrian College Men's Lacrosse and the careers of
Michael Jonas and
Cameron Reed weren't aided by the stability of their trustee netminder and fellow record breaker,
Sam Spangler.
Spangler came to Adrian College in 2021 after graduating from Canton High School where he previously won Defensive Player of the Year. The Canton, Michigan native turned out to be a piece that Adrian College Men's Lacrosse would rely on for years to come, as he stood tall as the team's starting goalie for his entire tenure, aside from a short period he missed due to injury.
The 6'4", 235-pound brick wall started in 58 of his 61 career games played at Adrian, the most for each category by any goaltender in program history, earning 34 total wins, which places him second all-time behind Kevin Lerg (43 – '14). Thanks to his consistency and dominance in the goal crease, Spangler managed to stack up the saves, and in the first game of the 2025 agenda, he became the program leader for career saves. Now graduated, Spangler sits on the program thrown with 715 career saves and a .563 career save percentage.
This past season, Spangler joined in on the record-breaking fun with his teammates, as not only did he break career marks for saves and save percentage, but he also established the new program record for individual single season saves with 237, a record that he had already broken the year prior (205, '24). Furthermore, Spangler provided some secondary value to his team in the defensive zone, scooping 137 career ground balls to sit tied for seventh all-time in the program. Like that of Reed, Spangler also collected All-MIAA honors in all four of his seasons, including three instances on the Second Team and a lone First Team honor this past year as a Senior.
Aside from the program's championships in 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, and 2014, the 2025 campaign stood as one of the most historic and remarkable seasons for Adrian College Men's Lacrosse, as the team itself returned to hosting the MIAA Tournament Semifinal after going 5-1 in conference play for the first time in ten years. The Bulldogs also produced some new single season team records, including goals (270), assists (178), points (448), assists per game (9.89), and saves (251). Not to mention, having two Conference Players of the Year for the first time since 2014 and six All-MIAA recipients adds to the list of memorable achievements.
Of the three record-breaking Bulldogs – Jonas, Reed, and Spangler – they combined to break 19 total records alone in their final season and now possess a whopping 21 Adrian College Men's Lacrosse program records between the three of them.
"These three record breakers had outstanding careers and vaulted our entire program forward," said Head Coach,
Brett Wetzel, who just completed his seventh season under the helm of the program.
"Mike had an unbelievable season this year, ranking amongst the best in Division III in all offensive categories. He was a force this season and really drove the bus for us. Cam had a presence in all aspects of our game, he was our top cover man defensively, played on face-off wings, quarterbacked the clear and contributed offensively. Sam was always there when we needed him, and we could always trust that he was ready to bail us out of bad situations. His ability to make saves allowed us to play a fast-paced style that was hard for some teams to keep up with. I am extremely proud to say that I was able to work with these outstanding young men for the last four years."
Michael Jonas,
Cameron Reed, and
Sam Spangler will each leave an eternal legacy on Adrian College and the men's lacrosse squad as players who made a difference... players who broke records. Their leadership, contributions, achievements, and contagious work ethic will be stamped on the program for years to come.
Adrian College thanks these three student-athletes for their commitment to Bulldog athletics, congratulates them on their success and prestigious recognitions, and wishes them all the best in their future endeavors, whatever they may be.
